EU vs US Bed Sizes (and UK): Mattress Size Chart for Bed Buyers

A king in London is not a king in Los Angeles. When you buy upholstered beds for more than one market, the names on a size chart are less useful than the mattress dimensions behind them. This guide compares EU vs US bed sizes, adds the UK, and shows how to specify sizes in an upholstered bed order.

EU vs US bed sizes: the key differences

Continental Europe describes mattresses by width and length in centimetres, usually 200 cm long. The US uses inches and names such as twin, full, queen and king, with most lengths at 75 or 80 inches. The UK uses its own names on a mostly 190 or 200 cm length. The same name can therefore describe different mattresses, so always write the dimensions.

EU mattress sizes (cm)

Common nameMattress size (cm)
Single90 × 200
Small double120 × 200
Double140 × 200
Queen (varies by country)160 × 200
King (varies by country)180 × 200
Super king200 × 200

Names vary between countries: 160 × 200 may be called a queen, a double or a king depending on the market. Some markets also use 190 or 210 cm lengths.

Bed size vs mattress size

An upholstered bed is specified by the mattress it takes, but its outside dimensions are larger: the padded headboard, side rails and base add to the width and length. Two beds for the same mattress can have very different footprints. Our product pages list mattress sizes, for example 150 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm, together with the overall dimensions of each model.

How to specify sizes in an upholstered bed order

  • State the mattress width and length in centimetres; add inches only as a reference.
  • Name the market each size is for, so labels and documents match.
  • Ask for the overall bed dimensions and headboard height of each model and size.
  • Put each size on its own line in the quotation.
  • Confirm carton sizes and CBM per size; see export packaging.
